Oblique impact testing of bicycle helmets

چکیده

The performance of bicycle helmets was investigated in oblique impacts with a simulated road surface. The linear and rotational accelerations of a headform, fitted with a compliant scalp and a wig, were measured. The peak rotational accelerations, the order of 5 krad s when the tangential velocity component was 4 m s, were only slightly greater than in comparable direct impact tests. Oblique impact tests were possible on the front lower edge of the helmet, a site commonly struck in crashes, without the headform striking the ‘road’. Data characterizing the frictional response at the road/shell and helmet/head interfaces, was generated for interpretation via FEA modelling.

Comments on Depreitere et al. Lateral head impacts and protection of the temporal area by bicycle safety helmets. J. Trauma. 2007;62:1440.

The side of the head is vulnerable to trauma in bicycle injuries. Depreitere et al., demonstrated contact between a flat-faced pendulum, and the side of cadaver heads, when bicycle helmets was worn. Computer design methods were used to interpret these experiments, showing that typical helmets safely absorbed 75% of the impact kinetic energy before pendulum-to-head contact occurred. Furthermore,...

Bicycle helmets: head impact dynamics in helmeted and unhelmeted oblique impact tests.

OBJECTIVE To assess the factors, including helmet use, that contribute to head linear and angular acceleration in bicycle crash simulation tests. METHOD A series of laboratory tests was undertaken using an oblique impact rig. The impact rig included a drop assembly with a Hybrid III head and neck. The head struck a horizontally moving striker plate. Head linear and angular acceleration and st...

Bicycle helmets--are they up to standard?

On the 3 September, British Columbia's new mandatory bicycle helmet law came into effect. All cyclists on public roads and highways are now required to wear a bicycle helmet that meets one of the following standards CAN/ CSAD1 13.2-M89, Snell B-90, B-90S, B-95 and N-94, ASTM F1447-94, ANSI Z90.4-1984. The implementation of this law largely reflects the unremitting efforts of Glenna Ayerst, Dire...

A New Oblique Impact Test for Motorcycle Helmets

A new oblique impact test for motorcycle helmets is described, simulating a fall from a motorcycle on to the road surface or the windshield of a car. An instrumented headform falls vertically to impact a horizontally-moving rigid rough or deformable surface. Both the impact site on the helmet, and the vertical and horizontal velocities, can be varied, while linear and rotational accelerations o...

Numerical analysis of real-world cyclist crashes: impact speed, collision mechanism Pang et al. and movement trajectories Numerical analysis of real-world cyclist crashes: impact speed, collision mechanism and movement trajectories

This paper describes the development and testing of a three-dimensional computer model of a bicycle and rider. The model was developed using MADYMO and will assist in the reconstruction of bicycle crashes. In particular the model will be used to determine the rider’s pre-impact speed and kinematics during the impact. Three exemplar real-world bicycle crashes were reconstructed using a multi-bod...
